La Rioja

Argentina’s wine industry dates from the late 1800s when European immigrants left a legacy of old-vine plantings of Malbec, Bonarda, Barbera, Torrantes, Tempranillo, and Nebbiolo as well as the pink-skinned generic jug grapes Cereza and Criolla. Later plantings included more of the French grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Until recently, however, the most volume of wine produced was for local consumption where quantity surpassed quality, and low cost prevailed.
